2009 was a very tough year for many employers and candidates. With the New Year upon us there is a new optimism and at Cpl N.I. Ltd. we are already seeing signs of an upturn. More and more employers are looking for new employees and talking to us about their options in preparation for an economic recovery. These options are strategic and include the strengthening of the existing work force with top talent and discussing additional experienced labour with a flexible workforce model.
Currently there are still numbers of individuals looking to secure employment, but with economic recovery, more opportunities will present themselves and we should see these numbers decrease moving forward.
A recovery will also see passive candidates reviewing their options. They will review their current status and start to question their career enhancement within their existing environment or new experiences from emerging opportunities. Whatever the reason, what is clear is that with recovery comes prompt candidate movement.
As we emerge from this economic downturn we will again see more of a skill set shortage that is already evident in the IT and Retail sectors. Then the challenge of hiring experienced, flexible, committed individuals who match the ‘company fit’ and possess the same values and vision will become a more appreciated test for employers moving forward. The existing pool of top talent that is currently available, for some sectors, should diminish throughout the year. I believe we will see more and more temporary assignments and contract positions presented in Northern Ireland during 2010.
A flexible temporary workforce model will become very popular to employers moving forward. During the down turn companies had to cut the workforce down to the bare minimum. As more projects come on line and backlogs of work stack up then the need for a temporary workforce becomes very much evident. This is deemed as a ‘risk-free solution’ to the existing problem. This allows companies to fulfil their commitments whilst remaining cautious in recruiting. Many futures employees and stars will be reviewed, matched and sourced during the temporary assignments.
For candidates too this is beneficial. Many will discover that further exposure to projects, different companies and industries will add weight to their CV when looking to secure more permanent positions.
During 2010 I believe companies will again focus on employee development. 2009 was such a difficult year which resulted in the majority of companies focusing on strategic economic alignment whilst their employees worked at 120+% to ensure the safe keeping of the business and indeed their own jobs. Signs of recovery should ensure that companies will take stock and evaluate the all important ‘employee development plan’. Such a plan is vital for the futures of organizations from the identification of future leaders and top talent, to assisting with employee retention whilst creating opportunities for others coming through. We may also see more companies employing individuals who may not meet the exact skills and experience requirements though are a perfect personality and cultural fit to the organization. Onsite training will help with the nurturing of top talent for the future by developing existing skills and abilities.
